Grading Policy

Section
8-33.6 Kindergarten promotion criteria
– Except
in cases where the school superintendent recommends student promotion based on
rationale determined by the division, the following promotion criteria must be
met in order for a student to be promoted in kindergarten: (i) successful
completion of the five core subjects of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science,
and History/Social Sciences as evidenced by the report card; (ii) satisfactory
growth in social development as evidenced by documentation on the report card;
and (iii) meet or exceed benchmark on literacy screening instrument.

Section 8-33.7 Grades 1 and 2 promotion criteria – Except in cases where the school superintendent
recommends student promotion based on rationale determined by the division, the
following promotion criteria must be met in order for a student to be promoted
in grades 1 and 2: (i) successful completion of the five core subjects of
Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and History/Social Sciences as
evidenced by the report card; and (ii) meet or exceed the benchmark on literacy
screening instrument; and (iii) mastery (80%) of the division’s Standard of
Learning (SOL) assessments or the Division End of Year (EOY) Standards of
Learning assessments in the core subject areas of English and Mathematics.

Section 8 –
33.8 Grades 3 through 5 promotion criteria

Except in cases where the school
superintendent recommends student promotion based on rationale determined by
the division, the following promotion criteria must be met in order for a
student to be promoted in grades 3 through 5: (i) successful completion of the
five core subjects of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and
History/Social Sciences as evidenced by the student report card; (ii) mastery
of the division’s Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments (80%) or the Virginia
Standards of Learning assessments (400) in English and Mathematics; and (iii)
meet or exceed the benchmark on literacy screening instrument is also required
for grade 3.
